Plantain bananas are also known as Mzuzu bananas, are a variety of bananas predominantly grown in Malawi. Known for their sweetness, mzuzu bananas are popular locally and regionally and valued for their flavor and nutritional benefits. They contribute significantly to Malawi’s local economy.
These bananas renowned for their distinct sweetness, pack a nutritional punch and can be used as an alternative to rice, potato gnocchi, chips, or mash for any meal or snack.
Slices of ripe or unripe plantains are deep-fried until golden and are a popular snack or side dish. Plantains can be boiled and served as a starchy side dish or mashed. Thin slices of plantains are deep-fried to make crispy chips. Ripe plantains can be used in porridge or sweet desserts.
Harvesting:
Plantains are harvested at various stages of ripeness to accommodate different culinary uses. Green plantains are used for savoury dishes, while yellow or black plantains are used for sweeter preparations.
Position
Cultivating plantain banana plants requires a tropical or subtropical climate with consistently warm temperatures, high humidity, and well-draining soil.
Sunlight:
Plantains need full sun exposure for optimal growth and fruit production.
Soil:
They thrive in well-draining, loamy soil rich in organic matter.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilisation:

Spacing:
Plantain plants should be spaced adequately 3-5 metres apart(for proper growth and air circulation.
