Harvesting
The colour of cayenne peppers can range from green to red, with the red ones being more mature and often hotter in flavour. You can harvest when green or wait until they turn red for a spicier flavour.
To store cayenne peppers, you can air-dry them by hanging them in a warm, dry place. Once dry, you can grind them into powder for later use.
Position
Choose a sunny location for planting, as peppers thrive in full sunlight. Space the plants about 30-45cm apart, as cayenne pepper plants can grow quite large.
Soil
Cayenne peppers prefer well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-6.8).
Water
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Cayenne peppers prefer slightly drier conditions compared to some other pepper varieties.
Fertilising
Apply our slow-release Berry/All-plant Fertiliser. Use 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months. The roots will absorb what they need. Press the fertiliser balls gently under the soil and add a layer of mulch.
Mulching
Use from 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.
Re-apply every 3-4 months.
Pruning
Cayenne pepper plants may benefit from staking or caging to support the weight of the peppers. Pinch back the tips of the plants when they are about a 30cm tall to encourage bushier growth.
Pests/Diseases
Provide adequate spacing and airflow to prevent diseases, and avoid overhead watering.
Keep an eye out for common pepper pests like aphids and caterpillars.
Treat promptly or preferably use preventative measures by spraying with agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control)
