Description
The pods start off green and then turn into a bright yellow colour.
Heat Factor: Until 2011 this was the hottest pepper, rating between 800 000 and 1 001 300 on the Scoville Heat units. Bhut Jolokia chilli pepper is 125 times hotter than a Jalapeno.
Position:
Chilli peppers grow best in hot climates and won’t tolerate frost and they enjoy full sun. The ideal growing temperatures are between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.
Place in an area with full sun.
Chillies can grow in containers as long as they are positioned in a sun-filled windowsill. The size of the pot should be at least 10cm in diameter. When you notice roots growing out of the drainage holes, it is time to replant into a larger container.
Size:
Bhut Jolokia plants can grow to a height of 45 – 120 centimetres. Space the plants about 75 centimetres apart from each other.
Soil type:
Well-draining, fertile soil is essential. A pH level between 6.0 and 7.0 (neutral) is optimal.
Mix half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust and a bag of Superfrass for exceptional growth in your soil.
Fertilising:
Use our slow-release Berry/All-plant Fertiliser. Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months. Press the fertiliser balls gently under the soil and add a layer of mulch.
Mulch
Apply organic mulch to your Bhut Jolokia all year round.
Use from 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.
Re-apply every 3-4 months.
Watering
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist.
Staking:
Consider staking when your plants grow tall and skinny. This will give the plant upright support and protection against the wind.
Pests & Diseases
Chillies can be susceptible to fungal diseases like powdery mildew, blight, or root rot, particularly if grown in humid conditions.
Proper spacing, good airflow, and watering at the base of the plant can help prevent these issues.
Treat promptly or preferably use preventative measures by spraying with agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control)
