Description

Jalepeno Chilli Peppers (Capsicum)

Chilli peppers are vibrant, heat-loving plants that thrive in South Africa’s warm summers. Available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colours, and heat levels, chillies are easy to grow in garden beds or containers and can produce fruit for many months.

Jalapeño Chilli Peppers are probably the most popular and well-known chilli peppers and are loved for their rich flavour and versatility in the kitchen. Their distinct peppery flavour is wonderful in so many savoury applications; from topping nachos, tacos and sandwiches, to sautéed, grilled, or baked dishes. Because they have thick skins they are also perfect to stuff and bake or fry.

The younger fruits are milder than the mature ones. Dried, smoked jalapeños are called “chipotle peppers”.

In the Kitchen

Fresh, dried, or smoked chillies add bold flavour and heat to dishes from around the world. Use them in curries, sauces, stir-fries, salsas, marinades, soups, and dips, or stuff and grill larger varieties like Jalapeños.

The heat comes mainly from the white inner membranes, not the seeds.

Cultivation & Harvesting

Chillies grow best in full sun and rich, well-drained soil.

  • Plant once all danger of frost has passed
  • Enrich soil with compost and organic fertiliser
  • Water regularly but avoid waterlogged soil
  • Feed every 4 weeks once flowering begins
  • Harvest fruits regularly to encourage more production

Most plants start producing about 11 weeks after transplanting.

Health Benefits

Chillies are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, antioxidants, and minerals. Capsaicin, the compound responsible for their heat, is known to support circulation, digestion, pain relief, and overall wellbeing. Chillies may also help boost mood and support heart health.
