Description
Cornflower Mix (Centaurea cyanus)
Also known as Bachelor’s Buttons, Cornflower Mix produces delicate fringed blooms in shades of blue, pink, purple and white. These edible flowers are loved for their long-lasting colour, pollinator-friendly blooms and cottage garden charm.
In the Kitchen
Cornflowers have a mild spicy, clove-like flavour and are perfect for decorating salads, cakes, desserts, teas and cocktails. The colourful petals can also be used to infuse oils and vinegars.
Cultivation & Harvesting
Cornflowers grow well throughout most of South Africa and thrive in full sun with well-drained soil. They are easy to grow from seed and flower for months from spring into autumn.
- Sow directly into prepared garden beds or seedling trays.
- Ideal for cottage gardens, meadow plantings and containers.
- Keep soil moist until germination.
- Thin seedlings to about 35cm apart.
- Regular picking and deadheading encourage more flowers.
- Plants often self-seed and return each year.
In the Garden
Cornflowers attract bees, butterflies and beneficial insects, while the seeds are enjoyed by small garden birds. They combine beautifully with marigolds, poppies and ornamental grasses, adding vibrant colour to flower borders and wildflower gardens.
Excellent for cutting, drying and pressing, the blooms retain their colour well and are a favourite in floral arrangements.
