Description
Gem Squash (Cucurbitaceae)
Gem squash is an easy-to-grow warm season crop that produces tasty, nutritious fruits over a long harvesting period. The vigorous vines grow quickly in full sun and are ideal for home vegetable gardens.
Cultivation & Harvesting
Gem squash grows best in rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost and manure.
- Sow seeds directly into garden mounds in spring or early summer.
- Plant in full sun with plenty of space for the vines to spread.
- Water regularly, especially during hot weather.
- Feed with a balanced fertiliser once flowering begins.
- Mulch well to conserve moisture and keep roots cool.
Thin seedlings after germination, leaving only the strongest plants.
In the Garden
Gem squash grows well with:
- Basil
- Onions
- Runner beans
- Marigolds
- Nasturtiums
- Petunias
Avoid planting near potatoes. Traditional companion planting with corn and beans also works very well for squash crops.
Health Benefits
Gem squash is rich in beta-carotene, vitamins A, B and C, as well as calcium, potassium and magnesium. It is a healthy, nutritious vegetable that supports overall wellbeing.
In the Kitchen
Gem squash is wonderfully versatile. The flesh can be boiled, baked, roasted or added to soups and stews. The seeds can be roasted as a healthy snack, while the flowers and young leaves are also edible.
