Description
Alphonse Lavallée is a seeded handsome, robust grape variety—great for gardeners who want delicious table grapes and versatility for jams, juice, or wine. It also adds attractive foliage and fruit to trellised gardens. Medium-to-large, loose clusters of large, purple-black berries. The skin is thick and crispy, while the pulp is firm and juicy.
Enjoy fresh, or process into jams, jellies, juices, desserts, and light wines.
Position
Alphonse Lavelle Grape vine performs well in sheltered, sunny spots with well-drained soil. Light frost tolerant.
Soil
Well drained soil. Adding half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust and a bag of Superfrass will assist in rapid growth. They also protect the roots from being eaten by insects.
Watering
Deep, infrequent watering once established
Mulching
Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the trunk itself (any closer and it may cause excess moisture to damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.
Fertilizing
Apply 1 teaspoon of our Barry/All-plant, slow-release nitrogen-rich fertiliser every 4-5 months.
Pruning
Moderate prune in winter (dormant season) to remove dead wood and shape the vine. Train for good light penetration and air circulation. Suitable for a trellis, arbor, espalier or veranda décor. Leaves turn autumnal colours before dropping.
Pests and Diseases
ASpraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.
Practice good garden hygiene (remove fallen fruit and leaves).
Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.
