Lettuce Great Lakes (Lactuca sativa)

Great Lakes Lettuce is a crisp, refreshing lettuce variety with tender green leaves and a mild, sweet flavour. Perfect for salads, sandwiches and wraps, it is a reliable and disease-resistant choice for home gardeners.

Cultivation & Harvesting

Lettuce grows best during the cooler months but suitable varieties can be grown almost year-round in South Africa.

  • Plant in full sun to partial shade.
  • Grow in rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
  • Sow seeds directly or in seedling trays.
  • Keep soil consistently moist for sweet, tender leaves.
  • Mulch around plants to keep roots cool.
  • Feed regularly with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser.

Space plants about 25–30cm apart and harvest in 7–10 weeks. Sow every few weeks for a continuous supply.

Growing Tips

  • Water regularly to prevent bitter leaves.
  • Provide light shade during very hot weather.
  • Avoid planting too deeply when transplanting seedlings.
  • Reduce watering slightly once heads begin to firm up.

In the Kitchen

Great Lakes Lettuce is ideal for:

  • Fresh salads
  • Sandwiches and wraps
  • Burgers and tacos
  • Garnishes and healthy snacks

Its crisp texture and mild flavour make it a favourite for everyday meals.
