Description
Peas Sugar Snap (Pisum sativum)
Sugar Snap peas are actually a cross between regular garden peas and mange-tout peas. They are a beloved edible garden favorite known for their sweet, juicy flavor and crisp, crunchy texture. The plants produce heavy yields over a long harvest period and are easy to grow in raised beds or containers.
Sugar snap peas grow best in cool weather, climbing vigorously up to 2m with the help of trellises or supports.
In the Kitchen
Unlike shelling peas, both the pod and peas are eaten, making Sugar Snap peas perfect for snacking straight off the vine, tossing into stir-fries, or adding to fresh salads. They can also be steamed, or added at the last minute to soups, stews, stir-fries and pasta dishes.
Their sweet flavour pairs beautifully with mint, rosemary, meat dishes, and other vegetables.
Health Benefits
Peas are rich in vitamins A, C, and B vitamins, as well as calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, and folic acid. They are an excellent source of easily digested vegetable protein and form an important part of a healthy diet.
Cultivation
Peas are a cool-season crop and grow best in mild weather. In South Africa, sow from mid-February to May, or again in August and September, depending on your region.
Plant in full sun in well-prepared, compost-rich soil that drains well. Sow seeds directly into the garden about 3cm deep and 20cm apart.
Sugar snap peas grow up to 2m with the help of trellises or supports.
Keep the soil evenly moist and weed-free for the best harvests. Mulching helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.
