Description

Rocket  (Eruca sativa)

Rocket, also known as Arugula, is a fast-growing leafy green loved for its bold peppery flavour and excellent nutritional value. Perfect for sprouting or growing as microgreens, Rocket produces tender vibrant leaves that add a fresh spicy bite to salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and garnishes.

A favourite in Mediterranean cooking for centuries, Rocket is best harvested young when the leaves are mild, crisp, and tender. Mature leaves develop a stronger, more robust flavour, especially during hot weather.

In the Kitchen

Rocket is one of the most versatile salad greens and is enjoyed fresh or lightly cooked in cuisines around the world.

Its peppery flavour pairs beautifully with tomatoes, parmesan, mozzarella, olive oil, garlic, seafood, pasta dishes, roasted vegetables, and pizzas. Fresh Rocket leaves are commonly mixed into green salads, potato salads, and French-style mesclun blends.

In Italy, Rocket is traditionally added to pasta dishes, served with thinly sliced beef and parmesan, or scattered over pizzas after baking. The leaves can also be lightly sautéed in olive oil and garlic as a delicious side dish for meats and fish.

The edible flowers, young seed pods, sprouts, and mature seeds can also be enjoyed in salads, stir-fries, sauces, and pickles.

Health Benefits

Rocket is rich in vitamins A, C, and B vitamins, along with calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and folic acid. It is valued for supporting digestion, healthy skin, circulation, and immune function.

Rocket microgreens are especially nutrient-dense and are packed with antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds that contribute to overall wellness.

Cultivation

Rocket is an easy-to-grow annual herb that thrives in cool weather and grows quickly from seed.

Seeds can be sown directly into garden beds, raised beds, containers, or seed trays during autumn, spring, and cooler summer periods. In very hot regions, autumn sowing is recommended as plants tend to bolt quickly in extreme heat.

Rocket grows best in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. In cooler seasons it enjoys full sun, while in hot summer regions it performs best in morning sun or light semi-shade.

Seeds germinate rapidly, often within a few days, and leaves are ready to harvest within 2 to 3 weeks. Regular harvesting encourages continuous fresh growth throughout the season.

Rocket is remarkably drought tolerant once established and requires only moderate watering during dry periods. Allow a few plants to flower and set seed for easy seed collection or natural self-sowing in the garden.

Companion Planting

Rocket is an excellent companion plant for tomatoes, onions, and raspberries, helping to enhance flavour and encourage healthy growth in neighbouring crops.
