Description
PLEASE NOTE: Imported Tropical Trees are small in size.
The Rollinia is a tropical and exotic fruit that belongs to the Annonaceae family. It is native to South America, particularly the Amazon rainforest region, and bears fruit at 3 years of age.
Known for its delicious and aromatic, sweet and creamy flesh, Rollinia is often compared to the custard apple or sugar apple due to its similar texture and flavor. Its unique flavor has also been described as a mix of banana, pineapple, and lemon, and it is often compared to custard or sherbet.
It is typically eaten fresh by cutting the fruit in half and scooping out the flesh with a spoon.
Under optimal conditions it can reach a height of 15 metres.
Harvesting:
Rollinia fruit is harvested when it reaches maturity and the skin turns green to yellow. Gently twist the fruit from the tree or use pruning shears to avoid damaging the tree.
Growing Rollinia can take some patience, as it may take a few years for the tree to mature and produce fruit. However, with the right care and a suitable climate, you can enjoy this tropical fruit’s sweet and creamy rewards.
Position
Rollinia trees require a warm and tropical climate. They are sensitive to frost and cold temperatures, so it’s essential to plant them in an area with mild winters.
Choose a sunny location with full sun exposure for at least 6-8 hours daily.
The tree can tolerate humidity but should have good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
It can be grown is areas with light frost if it is protected in winter for the first 4 years.
Soil Type
Rollinia trees prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Sandy loam or loamy soil with good fertility is ideal.
Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, as Rollinia trees do not tolerate soggy soil.
Plant Rollinia trees during the warm months of spring or early summer. Avoid planting during the cooler months.
Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the tree’s root ball.
Gently remove the tree from its container and place it in the hole at the same depth as in the bag.
Fill the hole with soil and water thoroughly to settle the soil and remove air pockets.
Watering:
Rollinia trees like consistent moisture, but they don’t tolerate waterlogged soil. Water regularly, especially during dry periods.
Use a drip irrigation system or soaker hose to ensure even watering and prevent moisture on the leaves, which can lead to fungal issues.
Fertilising:
Apply our slow-release Berry/All-plant Fertiliser. For young trees, apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months. The roots will absorb what they need.
Provide micronutrients like magnesium, iron, and zinc, as deficiencies can affect fruit production. Using EM Multi is an ideal product to add to your soil.
Pruning:
Prune the tree to shape it and remove dead or diseased branches. Pruning can also help improve air circulation within the canopy.
Mulching:
Apply a layer of mulch around the tree’s base to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
Pest and Disease Management:
Watch for common pests like aphids, scale insects, and fruit flies. Use organic or chemical control methods as needed.
Protect the tree from fungal diseases by ensuring good air circulation, avoiding overhead watering, and applying fungicides if necessary.
We recommend Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) and organic Neem Oil to prevent and control the spread of these pests and diseases.
