Description
Sweetcorn Overland (Zea mays)
Sweetcorn Overland is a productive early-maturing variety that produces tall, sturdy plants and deliciously sweet golden cobs. Easy to grow in home gardens, this reliable variety thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, rewarding gardeners with generous harvests of tender, juicy kernels perfect for summer meals.
Unlike field maize, sweetcorn naturally contains more sugar and less starch, giving it its signature sweet flavour and tender texture.
In the Kitchen
Sweetcorn is wonderfully versatile and can be enjoyed boiled, grilled, roasted, steamed, or eaten fresh straight off the cob.
The sweet kernels are delicious in salads, soups, stir-fries, casseroles, breads, and side dishes, while baby corn can be harvested early for salads and Asian-style cooking. Simply boiled with butter and a sprinkle of salt, fresh sweetcorn remains a timeless favourite.
Maize meal is also widely used around the world in traditional dishes such as polenta, tortillas, mielie pap, ugali, and cornbread.
For the sweetest flavour, harvest and enjoy cobs as fresh as possible, as the natural sugars quickly begin converting to starch after picking.
Health Benefits
Sweetcorn is rich in dietary fibre, vitamins C and B3, and important minerals including magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, and manganese.
The fibre supports healthy digestion and helps maintain balanced cholesterol levels, while the complex carbohydrates provide long-lasting energy. Yellow sweetcorn is also rich in carotenoids, beneficial plant compounds that support eye health and overall wellbeing.
Corn silk has traditionally been used in herbal remedies to support bladder, kidney, and urinary health.
Cultivation
Sweetcorn is a warm-season crop best sown from spring through mid-summer once all danger of frost has passed.
Plant seeds directly into fertile, compost-rich soil in full sun. For best pollination, sow sweetcorn in short blocks of 3 to 4 rows rather than single long rows. Space seeds about 15cm apart and thin seedlings later to approximately 30cm apart.
Keep plants well-watered, especially during hot weather, and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Feed regularly with a nitrogen-rich organic fertiliser to encourage strong leafy growth and healthy cob development.
Sweetcorn matures quickly and is usually ready to harvest within 9 to 12 weeks. Harvest when the silks turn brown and the kernels release a milky liquid when pressed.
Companion Planting
Sweetcorn grows well alongside beans, tomatoes, dill, peanuts, and Jerusalem artichokes, making it an excellent addition to productive companion planting gardens.
