Description

Swiss Chard Fordhook (Beta vulgaris)

Swiss Chard Fordhook is a classic leafy green valued for its broad tender leaves, thick white stems, and mild earthy flavour. Easy to grow and highly productive, this nutritious vegetable is ideal for home gardens and provides continuous harvests over a long season.

In the Kitchen

Swiss chard is wonderfully versatile and can be enjoyed fresh or cooked in countless dishes.

Young leaves and tender thinnings are delicious in salads, while mature leaves can be steamed, sautéed, added to soups, stews, quiches, casseroles, and pasta dishes. The thick stems can be roasted, grilled, or steamed much like asparagus.

Simply cooked with olive oil and garlic, Swiss chard makes an excellent side dish, and it pairs beautifully with Mediterranean and Indian-style flavours.

Fresh leaves store well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks and can also be blanched and frozen for later use.

Health Benefits

Swiss chard is considered one of the most nutrient-rich leafy greens and is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

It is especially high in vitamins K and A, while also containing vitamins B and C, along with magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, selenium, and protein. Its high antioxidant content and fibre support healthy bones, circulation, digestion, and balanced blood sugar levels.

Cultivation

Swiss chard grows best during the cooler seasons of spring and autumn and thrives in temperatures between 12 and 24°C.

Plant in full sun or semi-shade in fertile, compost-rich soil with good drainage. Improve the soil with compost, aged manure, and an organic fertiliser before sowing.

Seeds can be soaked overnight to improve germination and are sown directly into prepared beds about 1cm deep. Thin seedlings as they grow to prevent overcrowding and allow strong healthy plants to develop.

Swiss chard requires regular watering, especially during hot weather, and benefits from light mulching to conserve moisture. Harvest outer leaves regularly to encourage continuous new growth throughout the season.

Companion Planting

Swiss chard is not only productive but also highly ornamental. Its attractive foliage makes it equally suited to vegetable beds, mixed borders, and large containers.

Swiss chard grows well alongside tomatoes, beans, beetroot, carrots, lettuce, celery, cauliflower, onions, and radishes.

Its large leafy growth can provide light shade for smaller vegetables, making it an excellent companion plant in productive mixed gardens.
