Description

Tomato Roma (Solanum lycopersicum)

A favorite among gardeners and cooks, Tomato Roma combines excellent flavor with versatility and reliability in the garden.

Ideal for sauces, pastes, and canning, Roma tomatoes are prized for their low moisture content and robust taste.

In the Kitchen

Few flavours compare to homegrown, sun-ripened tomatoes picked fresh from the garden. Unlike commercially grown tomatoes harvested green, vine-ripened tomatoes develop rich flavour, sweetness, and aroma naturally.

Tomatoes are wonderfully versatile and can be enjoyed fresh in salads, sandwiches, salsas, pasta dishes, soups, and grilled recipes. They are equally delicious roasted, stuffed, slow-cooked into sauces, or preserved as chutneys for winter use.

For the best flavour, store tomatoes at room temperature rather than in the refrigerator, as cold temperatures can reduce both taste and texture.

Health Benefits

Tomatoes are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and beneficial plant compounds that support overall health.

They are especially rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant responsible for the tomato’s vibrant red colour. Lycopene is associated with heart health and cellular protection and is even more easily absorbed when tomatoes are cooked.

Tomatoes also provide vitamins A and C, potassium, and fibre, making them an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

Cultivation

Tomatoes are warm-season plants that thrive in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Plant only once all danger of frost has passed.

Prepare planting holes generously with compost, well-rotted manure, bone meal, and an organic fertiliser to support strong growth and abundant fruiting.

Tomatoes are vigorous feeders and benefit from regular feeding throughout the season. Use a nitrogen-rich fertiliser during early growth, followed by a balanced tomato fertiliser once flowering and fruiting begin.

Water deeply and consistently, mulch well to retain soil moisture, and provide sturdy support or staking for healthy upright growth.

Companion Planting

Tomatoes grow exceptionally well with companion plants that improve growth and help repel pests.

Basil enhances tomato flavour while helping to deter insects and flies. Marigolds assist in reducing soil nematodes, while nasturtiums act as a trap crop for aphids.

Garlic may help deter red spider mites, and borage is traditionally grown alongside tomatoes to improve growth and attract beneficial pollinators. Lettuce also benefits from growing beneath taller tomato plants where it enjoys cooler shaded conditions.
